Ondo FRSC records 259 road crashes, 130 deaths in nine months

The Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) in Ondo State has revealed that 259 road crashes were recorded across the state between January and September 2025.

The State Sector Commander, Dr. Samuel Ibitoye, disclosed this on Monday in Akure during the 2025 Ember Months campaign launch themed “Responsibility For Your Safety: Stop Distracted Driving.”

According to Ibitoye, the annual campaign is meant to sensitize motorists and other road users on safe driving habits, ensure compliance with traffic rules, and discourage dangerous conduct on the highways during the busy festive period.

He noted that the ember months usually experience a surge in vehicular movement and traffic buildup, which often lead to impatience, speeding, and reckless driving.

“In Ondo State, it is lamentable that the command recorded 259 RTC from January to September 2025, out of which 130 people were killed. In other words, 71 crashes were fatal, 173 were serious and 15 minor ones occurred in the state within the period,” he said.

The FRSC chief said the situation required urgent and coordinated efforts to curb avoidable deaths, stressing that the command would continue to work closely with relevant agencies through sustained public enlightenment and strict enforcement of traffic laws.

He added that mobile courts would be deployed for on-the-spot prosecution of traffic offenders, while medical outreach programmes would be carried out in major motor parks to check drivers’ health conditions.

“With this ember months campaign, FRSC in Ondo State is positioned for 24 hours rescue operations to give emergency services to crash victims anytime of the day. Also enforcement of road traffic rules and regulations to create deterrence especially on the use of phone while driving among others,” he said.

Ibitoye appreciated Governor Lucky Aiyedatiwa and other stakeholders for their contributions to promoting road safety in the state, urging motorists to remain cautious and ensure that the 2025 ember months end without fatal incidents.
