Another coup as military officers seize power in Gabon, cancel election results

Another military coup has occurred in Gabon with a group of senior Gabonese military officers taking over power in the country.

The officers in their claims said they represent all Gabon’s security and defence forces, asserting their authority over the nation.

Addressing the nation on local television, the officers declared the cancellation of the election results, closure of all borders until further notice, and the banning of all state institutions.

Reuter reports that gunfire could be heard in the capital city, Libreville, as tensions escalated following the officers’ announcement.

Speaking on behalf of the Gabonese people, the officers expressed their determination to safeguard peace by bringing an end to the current regime.

According to the military officers, their actions reflect widespread discontent and dissatisfaction with the electoral process and the administration of President Ali Bongo.

Recall that President Bongo, who is the incumbent leader emerged victorious in the presidential election, after polling 64.27% of the vote, according to the Gabonese election center.

If the coup succeeds till the end, it would be the 8th time in west and central Africa since 2020.

Niger is currently in the dark after the military too over power in the country.

Bongo, 64, has been updated in power since 2009.
