Labour Party’s 2023 presidential candidate, Peter Obi, has praised the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation (NNPC) for delivering on its commitment to rehabilitate the Port Harcourt refinery.

The refinery, which began operations on Tuesday, has an installed capacity to process 60,000 barrels of crude oil daily.

According to NNPC, it is currently operating at 70% capacity, with plans to increase to 90% soon.

The refinery produces Straight-Run Gasoline (Naphtha), blended into 1.4 million litres of Premium Motor Spirit (PMS or petrol) per day, alongside 900,000 litres of kerosene, 1.5 million litres of diesel (AGO), and 2.1 million litres of Low Pour Fuel Oil (LPFO).

Additional quantities of Liquefied Petroleum Gas (LPG) are also being generated.

Around 200 trucks are expected to transport products daily from the facility.

In his response, Obi commended the NNPC for this milestone, describing it as a positive development.

However, he stressed the importance of transparency and accountability in managing Nigeria’s oil resources.

Obi emphasized that Nigerians deserve to see tangible benefits from increased refining capacity, including economic gains that contribute to long-term development.

He also welcomed news of progress at the Kaduna refinery, expressing optimism about its potential to enhance productivity, improve transportation, and ease economic pressures nationwide.

While celebrating these achievements, Obi urged the NNPC to ensure the outcomes have a meaningful impact on pump prices and the overall economy.

“These developments mark progress, but transparency is essential.

“Nigerians must be assured of responsible management of the country’s vital oil resources to guarantee that the benefits reach every citizen,” Obi stated.

He concluded by noting that the nation must focus on sustainable development.
