Adeyanju applauds AIG Gumel for allegedly opposing emergency declaration in Rivers

Human rights lawyer Deji Adeyanju has commended Assistant Inspector General of Police (AIG) Usaini Gumel for his alleged firm stance against the controversial move to declare a state of emergency in Rivers State.

In a statement issued to journalists as well posted on his verified Facebook page, Adeyanju praised Gumel’s integrity and courage, describing his opposition to the unconstitutional declaration as a rare display of leadership in challenging times.

According to Adeyanju, Gumel’s willingness to speak out against undemocratic actions, despite his position within the police hierarchy, is a sign of hope for Nigeria’s democratic future.

“If more people in authority show such courage, Nigeria stands a chance at preserving its democratic values,” he stated.

However, Adeyanju also criticized the Inspector General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun, for allegedly orchestrating Gumel’s transfer to the Community Policing, Research, and Planning department.

The reassignment, which followed Gumel’s informal remarks opposing the state of emergency and the suspension of Governor Sim Fubara, has raised concerns about the suppression of dissent within the police force.

Adeyanju noted that Gumel’s remarks were made privately among colleagues, suggesting that a breach of trust led to his sudden transfer.

He emphasized the need for a culture that protects those who stand for justice rather than punishing them.

Calling on more Nigerians, especially those in leadership positions, to emulate Gumel’s bravery, Adeyanju urged a collective stand against unconstitutional actions.

“We must all speak out against lawlessness and defend our constitutional rights to ensure democracy thrives in Nigeria,” he concluded.
