The YALI Network Abuja has lamented the killing of one of its members, Miss Greatness Olorunfemi who lost her life after an encounter with a One Chance criminal syndicate in Abuja.
Greatness was pushed down a moving vehicle along the Maitama-Kubwa arterial highway reportedly by some criminal gang who specialize in brief kidnapping and snatching of valuables from victims.
In a statement released on Friday condemning the incident, the group said the incident which happened on Wednesday evening must be investigated by the FCT administration.
The statement issued and signed by Moyosoluwa Oladayo, the YALI Network Abuja coordinator said the organization is deeply saddened by the passing of Miss Greatness in the hands of some elements who are gradually taking over the nation’s capital.
It said, “YALI Network is deeply saddened to announce the tragic passing of our esteemed member, Ms. Greatness Olorunfemi. Greatness was gruesomely murdered by the dreaded “One Chance” syndicate who reportedly pushed her down from a moving vehicle along the Maitama-Kubwa arterial highway on the 26th of September, 2023. We extend our heartfelt condolences to the Olorunfemi family and friends during this incredibly difficult time.
“Just as every member of the YALI network, Greatness had this greatness from within. She was a dedicated and passionate member of the YALI Abuja Network, known for her commitment to community development, her love for God, and youth empowerment. Most notably was her lofty dream to play an integral role in the betterment of the Nation. A cause she was irredeemably sold out to. Her untimely and brutal demise, an avoidable one, is not only a personal loss to her immediate family but a profound and regrettable loss to the entire YALI Network Nigeria. We all had high hopes for her.
“The YALI Network Abuja condemns in strong terms this heinous act of violence and calls upon the FCT Minister and relevant security agencies to prioritize the safety of Abuja residents. We implore them to launch a thorough and transparent investigation into Greatness’ murder so that her perpetrators can be brought to book. It is essential that the culprits are held accountable for their actions and face the full weight of the law.
” In recent times, the rising insecurity within the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) has raised serious concerns among residents. It has now become imperative that immediate and effective measures be taken to address this issue. The safety and security of lives and property must be top priority, and we call upon the FCT Minister to liaise with security agencies to ensure the protection of our beloved community.”
Also speaking with AFRIPOST, a member of the network who prefers to remain anonymous accused the Maitama General Hospital of deliberately refusing to admit the victim. He alleged that the victim died only 20 minutes after the nurses on duty refused to admit her without a police report.
He said, ” The unfortunate event that led to Greatness’ death is a testament to the rising insecurity in Abuja. We also got some damning report of rejection and abandonment from the emergency section of the Maitama general hospital. And we are currently engaging with the Nigeria Police to investigate the matter even as we feel Maitama general hospital contravened the National Health Act that was passed in 2014. The law states that “a health care provider, health worker, or health establishment shall not refuse a person emergency medical treatment for any reason, and anyone that goes against the law is liable to a fine of N100, 000, a jail term of six months or both, upon conviction.
“Also, the National Assembly in July 2017 passed “the Compulsory Treatment and Care of Victims of Gunshots Bill”. It was aimed at ensuring that victims of gunshot wounds receive treatment from medical workers and assistance from security agencies.”
