Panic struck in Lagos on Thursday morning when a boat belonging to the Lagos Ferry Services (LAGFERRY) caught fire at the Ipakodo Ferry Terminal in Ikorodu, resulting in several injuries.

According to reports, the fire began in the boat’s engine, causing a large explosion. The blaze quickly spread to the cabin, trapping passengers inside.

One source described the incident: “There was a huge explosion from the engine side of the boat, which led to a fire engulfing the vessel.

“The exact cause is still unclear, but investigations are ongoing.”

The Lagos State Waterways Authority (LASWA) later confirmed the event, stating that the fire occurred around 6:45 AM.

The LAGFERRY boat, named “Igbega Eko,” was en route to Victoria Island when the incident took place.

LASWA’s emergency response team, along with LAGFERRY and other first responders, acted swiftly to evacuate all passengers and crew.

Four passengers sustained minor injuries and are receiving medical attention.

“Upon receiving the distress call, LASWA’s emergency response team mobilized to the scene and worked closely with LAGFERRY, boat operators, and first responders to manage the situation,” LASWA reported.

“We are conducting thorough investigations into the cause of the incident, in collaboration with LAGFERRY and other partners.

“Our priority remains safety, and we will act on any recommendations to improve fire prevention measures across Lagos’ waterways.”

LASWA assured the public that all safety protocols were still in place and that ferry services would continue as scheduled.

Passengers were encouraged to remain calm and follow safety guidelines while using the waterways. Further updates will be provided as the investigation unfolds.
