Barcelona edge Atletico to set up Copa del Rey final against Madrid

Must read

Barcelona secured a narrow 1-0 victory over Atletico Madrid on Wednesday, booking its first Copa del Rey final appearance in four years.

The win set up a high-stakes “El Clasico” showdown against Real Madrid.

Ferran Torres netted the decisive goal in the first half, sealing Barcelona’s progression with a 5-4 aggregate score following a dramatic 4-4 draw in February’s first leg.

Real Madrid, meanwhile, advanced after defeating Real Sociedad in extra time on Tuesday, also winning 5-4 on aggregate.

This will be the first time the Spanish giants face off in a Copa del Rey final since the 2013-14 season when Madrid emerged victorious.

Atletico Madrid endured another frustrating exit on home turf, having also been knocked out of the Champions League by Real Madrid in a penalty shootout earlier this season.

The club was seeking its first Copa final since 2013 when it defeated Madrid to claim its 10th title.

Barcelona, the most decorated club in Copa del Rey history with 31 titles, last reached the final in 2021, where it triumphed over Athletic Bilbao.

Madrid, making its second final appearance in three years, claimed its 20th title by beating Osasuna in 2023.

The highly anticipated final will take place in Seville on April 26 and will mark the third meeting between the Spanish giants this season.

Barcelona has already secured two victories over Madrid—4-0 in La Liga and 5-2 in the Spanish Super Cup.

The fierce rivals could also cross paths in the Champions League.

During the match, Ferran Torres broke the deadlock in the 27th minute, finishing smartly inside the box after an assist from Lamine Yamal.

Atletico’s Alexander Sorloth thought he had equalized in the 69th minute, but his goal was ruled out for offside.
