Edo PDP expels impeached deputy governor Shaibu, others

Must read

On Wednesday, the Edo chapter of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) announced the expulsion of former Deputy Governor Philip Shaibu from the party.

TREND News also reports that the party also expelled Dan Orbih, the national vice chairman (South-South), and Omorgie Ihama, a former House of Representatives member for Oredo Federal Constituency.

The expulsions were attributed to anti-party activities, according to a statement issued by the party’s state publicity secretary, Ogie Vasco. The statement, released in Benin, detailed that the decision was made during a meeting attended by nine members of the state working committee at the party’s secretariat.

“The SWC has extensively deliberated on the issue and resolved to expel, with immediate effect, Chief Dan Orbih, National Vice Chairman South South. It also decided to expel Phillip Shaibu and upheld the expulsion of Ogbeide-Ihama from Ward 2, Oredo Local Government Area,” Vasco said.

In response, Mr. Orbih contested the legitimacy of the expulsions, stating that the body had no authority to suspend a member of the national working committee or expel anyone without adhering to the party’s constitutional provisions.

“When a group of persons sits down to make pronouncements that are unconstitutional, it only shows their ignorance of the party’s constitution. That is all I have to say about that and nothing more,” Mr. Orbih told journalists.

Reacting, Mr Orbih told journalists that the body had no powers to suspend a member of the national working committee or expel anybody without following the provision of the party’s constitution.
