NDLEA dismantles lethal drug syndicate, seizes fentanyl in Anambra

Must read

In a significant operation, the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) has successfully busted a lethal drug syndicate involved in the illicit importation and trafficking of Fentanyl, a potent synthetic opioid. Fentanyl, which is 100 times stronger than Tramadol, poses a grave threat to the youth population targeted by these cartels. This article provides insights into the arrest of two syndicate members, the dangers associated with Fentanyl, and the concerted efforts of the NDLEA to combat the illicit drug trade.

The NDLEA announced the arrest of individuals connected to a syndicate engaged in the importation and trafficking of Fentanyl, a highly potent synthetic opioid. This illicit drug is known to be 100 times stronger than Tramadol and poses a significant risk to the targeted youth population. The arrest took place at Ogbogwu Market, located at the Onitsha Head Bridge in Anambra State.

The NDLEA’s spokesperson, Femi Babafemi, disclosed that the operation was a result of a well-coordinated effort following an earlier alert issued by the anti-narcotics agency. The alert warned of criminal elements planning to flood the Nigerian market with Fentanyl, a drug responsible for a high percentage of overdose deaths and a major contributor to fatal and nonfatal overdoses in the United States. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), Fentanyl is significantly more potent than morphine and heroin.

The successful operation at Ogbogwu Market in Onitsha was made possible through credible intelligence and collaboration with local and international partners. The NDLEA had been monitoring the market undercover for several months. Convinced of having gathered sufficient evidence, Brig. Gen. Mohamed Marwa (retd), the chairman/chief executive officer of the NDLEA, ordered the deployment of operatives to apprehend members of the syndicate one by one.

The first arrest was that of Odoh Collins Oguejiofor, who was caught with packets of 100 micrograms of Fentanyl while on a business mission. Following this, Oliver Chigozie Uzoma, described as a major dealer in other illicitly manufactured pharmaceutical opioids, including Fentanyl, was apprehended. The NDLEA seized various quantities of banned and controlled drugs from Uzoma, including liquid Fentanyl and other substances like Ampules of Sustanon, Rivavirin, Erythropoietin, and Pethidine.

The NDLEA’s successful operation in Anambra State resulted in the dismantling of a dangerous drug syndicate involved in the illicit trade of Fentanyl. The arrests of key members and the seizure of various drugs highlight the agency’s commitment to combatting the illicit drug trade. The potency and risks associated with Fentanyl underscore the urgent need for effective enforcement measures to protect vulnerable populations. The NDLEA’s efforts serve as a reminder of the ongoing battle against drug abuse and the commitment to safeguarding public health and well-being.
