LP Crisis: NLC backs Abure, urges caution in frivolous suits

Must read

The Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) has expressed its support for Julius Abure as the National Chairman of the Labour Party amidst a leadership crisis within the party. This follows the suspension of Abure and other key officials on allegations of corruption, perjury, and forgery. The suspension was ordered by Justice Hamza Muazu of the High Court in the Federal Capital Territory, Abuja.

The NLC, through its President Comrade Joe Ajaero, issued a statement condemning the suspension, calling the allegations unfounded, unproven, and malicious. Ajaero stated that the union will attend the next court sitting in support of Abure and other suspended officials. The court order by Justice Muazu was to remain in effect until the hearing and determination of a motion on notice for interlocutory injunction.

Ajaero further criticized the use of ex-parte orders in such cases, citing their potential to compromise the integrity of the courts and violate the principle of presumption of innocence. He also expressed concern that the suspension could weaken the party from within or distract it from its fight to reclaim its victories at the polls.

The NLC urged the courts to exercise caution in entertaining frivolous suits and spurious prayers from party members whose interests are doubtful or dubious. The statement also questioned the continued presence of ex-convicts in public service or space without hindrance, while those yet to be found guilty are already being debarred from holding office.

The NLC reiterated its support for Julius Abure as the National Chairman of the Labour Party and called for caution and integrity in the handling of the leadership crisis. The union also urged the courts to uphold the principle of presumption of innocence and prevent the abuse of ex-parte orders.
