Communities urged not to give police officers unmanageable loans

Must read

Inspector General of Police, Dr. Kayode Egbetokun, has cautioned communities hosting police personnel against offering them large loans that may become difficult to repay.

The warning was delivered on Tuesday by the Kogi State Commissioner of Police, Miller Dantawaye, who represented the IG at the commissioning of a newly built divisional police headquarters in Imane, Olamaboro Local Government Area of Kogi State.

Dantawaye noted that while officers may seek financial help from community members, it is important that such support does not place undue financial pressure on them.

“Officers posted here might approach you for assistance, but please avoid offering substantial loans that could create financial strain or be hard to recover,” he said.

He also encouraged residents to look after the new station, which is the first of its kind in the area. The facility was donated by a native of the community, Dr. Peter Ali.

Kogi State Governor Usman Ododo, represented by his deputy Joel Oyibo, expressed gratitude to the donor and urged community members to partner with the police for improved security.

“I appeal to you all to support officers with timely information and collaboration to strengthen local security and protect lives and property,” the deputy governor said.

Dr. Ali, the donor of the police headquarters, said the project was driven by his desire to support security development in his hometown.

“This building goes beyond bricks and mortar. It represents a commitment to better safety, stronger police-community ties, and quicker response to security needs,” Ali stated.

He called on the people to safeguard the new station and ensure it remains a beacon of safety and progress for the area.
