Support us to stamp out copyright infringements- NCC tells journalists

The Nigerian Copyright Commission (NCC), has declared that the commission need the support of journalists across the country to tackle the menace of copyright infringements.

Director-General of NCC, Dr. John Asein made this declaration while speaking with journalists at a media parley with members of Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), Oyo state council on Wednesday.

The event was attended by Executive Secretary, Nigerian Publishers Association (NPA), Mr. Emmanuel Abimbola, NUJ Chairman, Comrade Ademola Babalola, NUJ National Trustee for B Zone, Comrade Adebayo Akamo and other members of the union.

Asein, while speaking at the event held at the NUJ Secretariat in Ibadan, said that the commission has power to arrest and prosecute people involved in copyright infringements.

He added that the commission need the support of journalists to achieve its aims.

“Copyright infringements has negative impact on the authors. We cannot do it alone.

“We need your support to stamp out copyright infringements. This means we all have responsibility.

“We have the power to search, arrest and prosecute. But, we rely on police, NSCDC and other security agencies so as to get it done. We have a good working relationship with the security agencies. The problem of enforcement is real.

Abimbola, in his contribution, described piracy as a menace.

He added that journalists and other stakeholders have a role to play to reduce it to the barest minimum.

“Piracy is a menace. We are fighting it and we are not going to relent”.
