AFCON 2024: Nigeria shocks host country, Cote D’lvoire in second group game

The Super Eagles of Nigeria defeated the host country, Cote D’lvoire at the ongoing 2024 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON).

The match on Thursday evening played at the Olympic Stadium in Ebimpé, ended in a goalless draw in the first half.

The second half, however, favored the Super Eagles as they got a goal via a penalty check by captain William Troost-Ekong.

The penalty was given to Nigeria after Victor Osimhen was played down at the eighteen by one of the Ivory Coast‘s players.

All other attempts by both teams to get a goal were unsuccessful, giving Nigeria a chance to remain in the tournament.

The result of the match which ended 1-0 in favor of the Super Eagles, moved their side to second position in Group A with four points from two games.

Ivory Coast are in third position with 3 points from the same number of games.

Meanwhile, Equatorial Guinea are on top of the group with a goals difference ahead of Nigeria, while Guinea-Bissau are in fourth position with no point.

Nigeria will now face Guinea-Bissau in their last group game in the coming days.
