The senator representing Benue South Senatorial zone, Abba Moro has reacted to statement by the All Progressives Congress chieftain and candidate in the just concluded Benue South Senate seat, Comrade Dan Onjeh..
In an interview on Channels television Wednesday, Moro while speaking on the sanctity of the constitution as regard the dissolution of elected councils in Benue State said almost 17 states are illegally running a caretaker committee as against elected chairmen.
He said, “Almost 17 states are operating illegal caretaker committees or administrators, and, by the constitution and pronouncement of the Supreme Court, these are illegal and must be halted.
“As I have said before, it’s a matter of who bells the cat. The system must find a way to correct this violation of the constitution and that’s the step that we have started taking now.
“Extreme situations require extreme solution, and so somebody certainly will have to muster the political will to ensure that the constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria is protected at all times.”
On the allegation by Comrade Dan Onjeh that the senator is condemning the illegal dissolution of the councils because he, Moro, is losing grip of his local government area, the senator said:
“How can I lose control of my local government area? My local government is not peopled by just the chairman, vice chairman, councillors and supervisory councillors.
I can assure you that as far I’m concerned, I’m in touch with my people. The fight is for my people and they appreciate the efforts that I’m making, to make sure that justice prevails. So, I’m in no way losing control of my people at all.
“Don’t forget that I’m a Senator of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, representing Nine LGAs in my constituency, and so I have no problem at all.
“I know that the reality on ground is that APC has taken control of the government in Benue State and I’m prepared to live with that, and for the sake of the people of Benue State, I’m also prepared to support the governor to succeed and achieve results, because if he fails, Benue State fails, and I’m a Benue State citizen. So, I don’t have problem with the governor.
“In six months time, if the tenure of the elected councils expires, the governor is going to conduct an election and he has the privilege of ensuring that his party people and supporters also win elections to become chairmen, vice chairmen and councillors, and I don’t have problem with that, but the truth is that whether party A or B, what’s wrong is wrong, and this one, certainly, as long as it runs contrary to the constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria that we all swear to protect, I think it is wrong.”
