Gov Otti initiates probe into past administration’s handling of government property, funds

Governor Alex Otti of Abia State has taken decisive action to investigate the previous administration of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) that governed the state from May 29, 2015, to May 29, 2023.

In a letter with reference number SSG/ABS/S.074/vol 6/2, dated June 23, signed by the Secretary to the State Government, Prof Kenneth Kalu, and seen by LEADERSHIP in Umuahia, the state capital, Governor Otti outlined his intentions to probe the handling of government property and funds.

The letter, addressed to Justice Florence Ikwuoma Duruoha-Igwe, bore the title: “Appointment as Chairman of Judicial Panel of Inquiry on Recovery of Government Property and Funds.”

Governor Otti stated that the specific terms of reference for the panel and the date of its inauguration would be duly communicated to Justice Duruoha-Igwe.

The panel consists of esteemed individuals including Prof Ogwo Ekeoma Ogwo, a former Vice-Chancellor of Abia State University Uturu, Prof Ursula Ngozi Akanwa, Mazi Ugochukwu Okoroafor, and Rev. Fr. (Barr) Alex Okonkwo.

Prior to the inauguration of the Otti administration, there were widespread reports of looting of government property, including office equipment, vehicles, and other valuable assets across the state.

Upon assuming office, Secretary to the State Government, Prof Kenneth Kalu, issued a statement urging individuals in possession of government property to return them to the office of the Secretary to the State Government by 4:00 PM on Tuesday, June 6. The statement emphasized that failure to comply would result in severe sanctions.

The call for the return of government property underscores the commitment of the Otti administration to accountability and transparency in governance. By initiating this judicial panel of inquiry, Governor Alex Otti aims to uncover the truth, recover any misappropriated government property, and ensure that those responsible face the appropriate consequences.
