In a significant development, the Speaker of the House of Representatives, Hon. Tajudeen Abbas, has named Hon. Ikeagwuonu Ugochinyere (popularly known as Ikenga Imo) as the Deputy Chairman of the Special Committee on Media and Public Affairs of the House. The announcement was made during the Thursday plenary session, where the composition of various special committees was disclosed. These committees have been tasked with overseeing the affairs of the House until the resumption on July 4, 2023, and the subsequent establishment of the standing committees.

Among the special committees established are the Selection Committee, Media and Public Affairs Committee, Welfare Committee, Ethics Committee, Legislative Agenda Committee, and Internal Security Committee. Notably, Hon. Ugochinyere, who represents Ideato North/South Federal Constituency of Imo State, has been appointed as the Deputy Chairman of the Media and Public Affairs Committee.

Prior to his election into the National Assembly, Hon. Ugochinyere served as the spokesperson for the Coalition of United Political Parties (CUPP), showcasing his extensive experience in communication and public affairs. As a first-time legislator, he was among the visionary few who firmly believed in the leadership of Speaker Abbas and Deputy Speaker Benjamin Kalu in the 10th House. Despite his affiliation with the opposition People’s Democratic Party (PDP), Hon. Ugochinyere recognized the significance of electing competent individuals to guide the parliamentary proceedings. Consequently, he became the Communication Adviser for the Tajudeen Benjamin Kalu (TBK) Group, campaigning ardently for their success.

Hon. Ugochinyere is widely acknowledged for his confidence and his unwavering presence in the media. His appointment as the Deputy Chairman of the House Committee on Media and Public Affairs further underscores his aptitude in this field, positioning him to contribute significantly to the communication efforts of the House of Representatives.
