President Bola Tinubu’s historic role restoring democracy in Nigeria – Dokubo

Must read

Asari Dokubo, the former leader of the Niger Delta Peoples Volunteer Force, alongside prominent activists such as Frank Kokori and Awa Bamiji, came together to commemorate the significant contributions made by President Bola Tinubu during the fight to restore democracy in Nigeria after the annulment of the June 12, 1993 presidential election.

During a world press conference held by the Coalition for a Better Nigeria, Dokubo expressed his satisfaction that the struggle for June 12 had been realized with Tinubu’s election as president in the February 25, 2023 general election.

Dokubo criticized those who were unaware of the battle to restore democracy, dismissing their claims that their mandates had been stolen. He also took a swipe at former President Olusegun Obasanjo, accusing him of laying the foundation for Nigeria’s ongoing challenges.

“Tinubu fought alongside us during June 12, and that’s why I supported him. I will continue to support President Tinubu because of his principles and his actions during June 12. If Tinubu fails as president, hold me responsible,” stated Dokubo.

Kokori expressed optimism in Tinubu’s ability to positively transform the nation, emphasizing the belief held by June 12 activists that Tinubu would not disappoint. Kokori believed that individuals like the late Moshood Abiola would be delighted that one of those who fought for his freedom and democracy had assumed power.

Bamiji, the convener of the pro-democracy group, stressed the importance of national unity and healing the wounds caused by the events surrounding June 12. He saw President Bola Tinubu’s emergence as an opportunity to rebuild the nation and initiate reconciliation where necessary.

“It is an opportunity for us to rebuild our nation and initiate reconciliation where necessary. Let us leave the past behind and forge national unity, as we have witnessed the best atonement in the person of President Bola Tinubu. Let us forget the past and begin the process of unification,” said Bamiji.
