Coalition of northern groups raises alarm over alleged plan to arrest key aspirants for NASS leadership positions

Must read

As the 10th National Assembly prepares for inauguration, the Coalition of Northern Groups (CNG) has expressed concern over an alleged plot to arrest prominent northern aspirants vying for the positions of House of Representatives Speaker and Senate President. The CNG also claims that former Governor Abdulaziz Yari of Zamfara State and his supporters are being threatened to deter him from contesting based on due process.

In a statement, CNG spokesperson Abdul-Azeez Suleiman called upon President Asiwaju Bola Tinubu to uphold the rule of law and prevent any attempts to intimidate individuals exercising their rights to vote and be voted for. Suleiman emphasized that these actions were being taken without Tinubu’s consent, potentially aimed at undermining the larger interests of the northern region.

The CNG revealed that the alleged plot extended to aspirants for positions in the House of Representatives, who were targeted for harassment and intimidation. Furthermore, there were speculations about the introduction of a suspicious electronic voting system to monitor voting patterns in the National Assembly, raising concerns about transparency and fairness.

Suleiman expressed confidence in Tinubu’s democratic background and belief in the rule of law, assuring that the respected leader would not support any actions that violate personal liberty and freedom from harassment. He also highlighted the importance of maintaining a strong relationship between Tinubu and the North, where he enjoys substantial support and genuine friendship.

The CNG reiterated their previous warnings to the President regarding the activities of opportunistic political actors with ulterior motives. They urged him to swiftly address the brewing plot and reaffirm his commitment to impartial governance, thus thwarting any attempts to create discord, particularly within the North.

It is crucial to remember that the majority of northern votes were cast in favor of Tinubu and the All Progressives Congress (APC), significantly contributing to their electoral success.
