Former Rep affirms Governor Wike’s non-interference in Fubara’s administration

In a recent interview, Hon. Ogbonna Nwuke, a former member of the House of Representatives, clarified that the immediate-past Rivers State Governor, Nyesom Ezenwo Wike, has no intentions of exerting control over his successor, Siminalaye Fubara. Nwuke emphasized that Fubara’s decision to retain four Commissioners from the previous administration aligns with the principles of consolidation.

During the interview held in Port Harcourt, Nwuke criticized those who insinuated that the former governor would govern as a “Premier” from his private residence while the incumbent governs from Government House in Port Harcourt. He asserted that throughout the state’s history, no governor has governed under the influence of their predecessor.

Nwuke stated, “I think those are comments made by mischief-makers who mistakenly assume that because they would act in such a manner, someone else would do the same. Governor Wike ran for the Presidency of this country under the PDP but did not succeed.” He further highlighted that Wike chose not to run for the senatorial ticket, which ultimately led to an Etche man becoming a senator.

The former federal lawmaker emphasized that the history of Rivers State demonstrates that successors have always had the freedom to govern in accordance with their own conscience. He cited examples such as Peter Odili and Rotimi Amaechi, who acted independently when they assumed the role of governor, without taking instructions from their predecessors.

Nwuke continued, “Nyesom Wike has governed Rivers State as its governor. So, what is this story about a premier in Rumueprikom and a governor in Government House? Those who make such claims fail to understand the dynamics of power.” He highlighted that Wike has openly expressed his willingness to offer advice to Fubara when needed and has advised him not to allow himself to be influenced by others, demonstrating that Wike has no intention of controlling Fubara’s administration.

Regarding Fubara’s decision to swear in four former appointees of Governor Wike as commissioners, Nwuke explained that it reflects the principle of consolidation that they campaigned on. He stated, “We campaigned on the principle of consolidation, not exclusion. The appointed commissioners were proven performers in the previous administration. Recognizing their accomplishments is one way to encourage and inspire others to perform.”
