NUJ plans nationwide protests in response to subsidy removal

Must read

The Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ) has announced its intention to organize nationwide protests if the Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNCPL) fails to reverse the new price regime in the oil sector. The NUJ’s decision was made during an emergency Central Working Committee meeting held on Saturday, and the protests are scheduled to begin on Wednesday, 7th June 2023.

In a statement released after the meeting, Shuaibu Usman Leman, the National Secretary of NUJ, emphasized the directive for all State Councils of the Union to mobilize their members to withdraw their services and participate in the nationwide protests. The main demand is for the NNCPL to reconsider the recent fuel price increase.

The Central Working Committee reiterated the argument that the removal of fuel subsidies would free up resources that could be redirected towards infrastructure development and the creation of additional job opportunities. However, the sudden removal of subsidies may lead to social unrest and protests as citizens perceive the government as insensitive to their plight.

The statement also highlighted the significant increase in petroleum product prices and the subsequent rise in inflation, which has significantly reduced the purchasing power of the population. These factors contribute to the growing concerns and frustrations among the public.

The NUJ’s planned nationwide protests aim to raise awareness of the adverse effects of the subsidy removal and press for a reconsideration of the new price regime. The Union believes that it is crucial to address the concerns of the citizens and ensure that their voices are heard regarding this matter of national importance.
