FRSC urges Nigerians to embrace bicycles for sustainable transportation

Must read

The Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) is calling on Nigerians to embrace bicycles as a sustainable means of transportation. Recognizing the detrimental effects of vehicle emissions on the environment, the FRSC emphasizes the benefits of using bicycles, which do not emit harmful smoke.

During the commemoration of the 2023 United Nations World Bicycle Day in Ilorin, the Kwara State sector commander of the FRSC, Fredrick Ogidan, highlighted the significance of cycling for creating more sustainable, healthy, and inclusive societies.

Ogidan emphasized the positive impact of cycling on health and the environment. Regular cycling increases physical activity and reduces the risk of non-communicable diseases such as cancer and diabetes. Additionally, cycling contributes to a decrease in air and noise pollution, benefiting both individuals and the community at large.

In order to ensure the safety of cyclists, Ogidan urged the Kwara State government to incorporate bicycle tracks into future road construction projects. He also advised bicycle riders to prioritize their safety by wearing helmets and installing reflectors on the front and rear of their bicycles.

“Cycling is a simple, affordable, reliable, clean, and environmentally friendly means of transport, promoting environmental stewardship and good health,” Ogidan stated.

Furthermore, Ogidan encouraged the use of bicycles as a means of eradicating poverty, promoting sustainable development, enhancing education (including physical education) for children and young people, improving overall health, preventing disease, and fostering social inclusion and a culture of peace.

The FRSC’s call to embrace bicycles highlights the importance of sustainable transportation options in reducing environmental impact and improving overall well-being. By incorporating cycling into their daily routines, Nigerians can contribute to a greener future while enjoying the health benefits associated with this eco-friendly mode of transportation.
