DHQ urges political solution for Benue killings, calls for collaborative efforts

Must read

The Nigerian Defence Headquarters (DHQ) has refrained from commenting on the recent controversy surrounding the attack on Iye community in Uvir council ward, Benue State. The Military High Command believes that a political approach, rather than a military one, is necessary to resolve the Benue crisis and put an end to the violence.

Reports emerged that armed men in military uniforms had allegedly attacked the Iye community on May 21, 2023, resulting in the death of at least 18 villagers, including women and children. The community has accused the military of being involved in their plight. However, Major General Musa Danmadami, the Director of Defence Media Operations, during a press briefing in Abuja, emphasized that the military is focused on highlighting its positive achievements and not dwelling on the negative aspects.

Major General Danmadami stated, “Our troops are making significant progress, and we do not want to dampen their morale by solely focusing on the negative incidents. While negative events did occur during the period in question, we believe that a military solution alone may not completely resolve the situation in Benue State. It requires a comprehensive approach involving political and governmental efforts.”

He further expressed optimism that appropriate solutions would be implemented in the coming weeks, leading to a reduction in the violence witnessed in Benue State and other areas facing similar challenges across the country.
