Senate expresses concern over continual increase in airfare

Must read

The continual increase in airfare by airline operators is a cause for concern, according to the chairperson of the Senate Committee on Aviation, Biodun Olujimi. The Senator stated that the incessant increase is impeding the growth of Nigeria’s aviation sector. Olujimi expressed her concerns during the 2nd edition of Federal Airport Authority of Nigeria (FAAN) national conference in Abuja, which had the theme: ‘Sustainability of the Aviation Industry in Nigeria.’

The Senator also expressed her disappointment in the poor implementation of aviation policies in Nigeria and urged the federal government to take urgent action to stop the encroachment of airport facilities, which she believes is having a negative impact on the growth of the sector.

Olujimi emphasized the economic and international benefits of the aviation sector, calling on the federal government to find a way to resolve any issues with aviation workers behind closed doors. She also stated that picketing is not suitable for aviation industries and that workers unions should avoid it.

The managing director of FAAN, Rabiu Yadudu, said that the conference was aimed at promoting partnership and sustainability to mitigate challenges hampering the aviation sector. The conference serves as a meeting point for private investors to tap into opportunities to invest and generate incredible returns on their investments.

The Minister of Aviation, Hadi Sirika, who was represented by the ministry’s permanent secretary, Dr. Emmanuel Meribole, stated that the Buhari-led administration has achieved significant growth in the aviation roadmap.

It is imperative for Nigeria’s aviation sector to be sustainable to boost economic growth and international development. The federal government must take proactive measures to address the issues affecting the sector and ensure that the growth of the aviation industry is not hampered
