NiMet warns of thunderstorm, heavy rains in 13 northern states

Must read

The Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NiMet) has issued a warning to residents in 13 northern states of Nigeria to expect thunderstorms and heavy rainfall in the coming days. According to NiMet’s spokesperson Muntari Ibrahim, thunderstorm cells have been observed over the northeastern part of the country and are expected to propagate westward, giving squally thunderstorms to cities including Borno, Taraba, Gombe, Bauchi, and Kano. The cells are also expected to propagate easterly, resulting in thunderstorms accompanied by squalls in Plateau, FCT, Nasarawa, Jigawa, Adamama, Yobe, Borno, Bauchi, Gombe, Kaduna, Kano, and Katsina states.

NiMet also warned that strong winds are likely to precede the rains, and as a result, trees, electric poles, unsecured objects, and weak buildings may be felled. To avoid being struck by lightning, the public is advised to be cautious and stay indoors, especially during heavy rainfall.

The organization also advised airline operators to periodically avail themselves of weather reports from NiMet for effective planning in their operations. NiMet further cautioned that moderate to heavy rainfall could lead to flash floods and advised the public to take necessary precautions. Disaster risk managers, agencies, and individuals are advised to be proactive to avert loss of lives and property during the rainy season.

It is crucial to heed NiMet’s warning and take the necessary precautions to avoid harm from the impending thunderstorms and heavy rainfall. By staying informed and being prepared, we can minimize the risk of loss of life and property during this season.
