Suspected cultists kill youth leader in Rivers, Police deny culprit identity

Suspected cultists killed the youth leader of Abarikpo community in Akoh Kingdom, Ahoada-East Local Government Area of Rivers State, Ebenezer Matthew on Wednesday night. This killing occurred less than three months after gunmen suspected to be cultists gang-raped a married woman, Chigbewejim Lawyer, to death in the same community. The killing has raised concerns among the people and has prompted calls from the Akoh Youth Congress (AYC) for security agencies and political leaders in Ekpeye ethnic nationality to rise up and check the activities of cultists in the area.

Comrade Ekeakita Hector Chineme, the Public Relations Officer (PRO) of AYC, confirmed the killing of Mathew and expressed that the deceased was someone who had been standing firm against cultists and insecurity in the community.

According to Ekeakita, the deceased’s stand against illegality may have led to his death. He called on security agencies and political leaders to rise up to check the activities of cultists in the area.

Meanwhile, the Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO) in Rivers State, Grace Iringe-Koko, confirmed the killing of the community youth leader but denied that the killing was cult-related. She stated that the Police have identified the person who led the gang that killed the youth leader, and efforts are on to arrest the culprits as investigation continues.

The killing of the youth leader in Abarikpo community has raised concerns among the people and has prompted calls for action from the Akoh Youth Congress. Efforts are currently being made to arrest the culprits and bring them to justice
