Nigeria Police Force demotes Inspector to Sergeant for assaulting civilian in Rivers

Must read

The Nigeria Police Force (NPF) has demoted an Inspector, Adejoh Siaka, to Sergeant after he was captured on video assaulting a driver in Rivers State. The incident occurred at Emouha in Rivers State, and the video circulated widely on social media on April 9, 2023.

Following complaints and findings based on the video evidence, the affected policemen were subjected to an orderly room trial by the Force Provost Marshal. The trial revealed that Sergeant Ndiwa Kpuebari was also present at the scene but did not discourage the inappropriate and shameful act. As a result, he was severely reprimanded.

Inspector Friday Obaka, who was absent from the scene of the incident, was discharged unconditionally at the conclusion of the proceedings. The NPF noted that all three policemen would be transferred from Rivers State to other Commands and formations to continue their police duties.

The Inspector-General of Police has urged officers and men of the Force to be diligent and uphold the principles of professional policing. They should respect the fundamental rights of all citizens, as enshrined in the provisions of the 1999 Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria (as amended).

The incident has once again brought to the fore the issue of police brutality in Nigeria, which has been a source of concern for citizens and human rights groups. It is hoped that the NPF’s action will serve as a deterrent to other officers who may be inclined to abuse their powers while carrying out their duties
