Varsity lecturer takes legal action against Commissioner of police over ulawful arrest

Dr. Ishaq Osagie-Eweka, a lecturer in the Department of Biochemistry at the University of Benin (UNIBEN), has taken legal action against the Commissioner of Police in Edo State, CP Mohammed Adamu Dankwara, over his alleged unlawful and unconstitutional arrest and detention. Dr. Osagie-Eweka’s petition titled “The Unseeming Behaviour, Abuse and Wrong Use of Office by CP Mohammed Dankwara of Edo State Police Command and the Unlawful and Unconstitutional Arrest” has been addressed to the Executive Secretary, National Human Rights Commissioner. The lecturer had given Dankwara 48 hours to reveal to the public the reason for his arrest and parade like a common criminal before the public.

The NHRC’s acknowledgment letter was signed by Atedze Juliet Mimi, and it was made available to journalists in Benin City, the capital of Edo State. The complainant has been registered as C/2023/CPR/226/HQ, and it is required that the reference number is used in all correspondence with the commission.
