The abductors of Professor Onje Gye-Wado, a former deputy governor of Nasarawa State, have demanded N70 million ransom for his release. The former deputy governor was abducted on Thursday night in Rinza, Wamba local government area of the state. His kidnappers initially did not give any conditions for his release, but they later reached out on Friday night, requesting N70 million for his freedom.
A family member confirmed that the family had offered the kidnappers N2 million, explaining that it would be difficult to raise the demanded amount, especially with the public holidays from Friday till Monday.
Kidnapping for ransom has become rampant in Nigeria, with the country witnessing a surge in abductions in recent years. The insecurity situation in the country has deteriorated, and bandits and other criminal elements are taking advantage of it to carry out their heinous acts.
