On Monday, there was tension around the ECWA Good News Church Ahmadu Bello way in Jos as a police officer shot and killed Ibuchi Iffoneze, a 17-year-old trader at the Bayan banki market in Jos North LGA.
The incident occurred around 11:00 am when a police patrol team tried to arrest some Okada riders. One trader and an Okada rider sustained injuries of varying degrees and were rushed to the hospital for treatment. According to the Chairman of the market, Alhaji Yayaha Umar, the police officers came to the market and arrested an Okada rider who disobeyed the law.
They then began shooting randomly and a stray bullet hit one of the market members. He called on the government to take serious action and arrest the perpetrators of the act. An eyewitness, Mr. Goodwin Onyeka, believes that it was a stray bullet from the police that killed the innocent trader.
The incident created tension around the market, and traders quickly closed their shops and ran to safety. Confirming the incident, the Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO) of the Plateau State Command, DSP Alfred Alabo, said he had just come from the scene of the incident and would issue a press statement concerning it soon.
