Kogi rainstorm renders scores homeless, residents cry for help

Must read

A heavy rainstorm has wreaked havoc on Iyara, the Headquarters of Ijumu Local Government Area of Kogi State, rendering several people homeless and causing injuries. The rainstorm destroyed several houses and educational facilities in the town. Unfortunately, an unspecified number of people sustained various degrees of injuries, and some of the victims are receiving treatment in an undisclosed hospital.

Residents and citizens of Iyara are still in shock, trying to salvage their belongings from the rubbles that the rainstorm left. Some victims are seeking refuge in worship centres and schools that were not affected. Speaking to journalists, a farmer, Mr. Mayomi Emmanuel, lamented how he lost several bags of his farm produce and grains that he kept for the planting season during the heavy rain.

The President of Iyara Development Association, Alh. Aliyu Badaki, expressed sadness over the disaster and called on the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) and Kogi State Emergency Management Agency (SEMA), Corporate Organizations, and well-to-do individuals to come to the aid of the community. He stated that the damage done by the storm is massive and beyond what the community alone can handle.

The people of Iyara are in dire need of assistance from the government and well-meaning Nigerians to alleviate the negative effects of the rainstorm. The Kogi State Government, NEMA, and other stakeholders must act swiftly to provide support to those who have been affected by this disaster.
