The Commonwealth Society of Beijing (CSB) has reaffirmed its commitment to extending its charity to member countries globally.
Mrs Zarah Jidda, who is the President of the society and wife of Amb. Baba Ahmad Jidda, Ambassador of Nigeria to China, said this in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Beijing.
Jidda said on the sidelines of the 2022 International Food Fair ceremony organised by CSB that although CSB was a social group, it had been established as a charity organisation.
According to her, the society organises activities and raises funds to donate to the needy.
“We raised 200,000 Yuan to fight the Coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic and we donated it to Wuhan. We were able to come out in the heat of the lockdown to raise funds.
“Since the pandemic we have not been able to carry out any public activity. We have made donations at every meeting among ourselves to ensure there are funds to achieve targets.
“This is the next major activity that we have had to do since the pandemic.
“The goal is to ensure that we get duly registered, because the impediment in China to register an association is great.
“We are looking at other options to get it registered also, to extend this charity to our country, but for now we are concentrating mainly on China,” she said.
Jidda added that measures had been put in place by the society to extend its charity programmes across the member countries.
She identified charity programmes in the form of donations to deaf in Shandong province and potable drinking water project to be among notable achievements by the society.
In a separate interview, Amb. Jidda, commended CSB for the charity programme, saying the activity promoted Nigeria’s image in the country.
According to him, the reality of the matter is that Nigeria has been brought to the front line of this activity, because my wife is the president of the CSB.
“CSB comprises all the member nations of the commonwealth and mainly women, which is the reason wives of ambassadors and female ambassadors are members in China.
“My wife has been CSB President for the past four years and because of her position, this annual display of traditional cuisine, music and several other traditional activities is held at the Nigeria embassy.
“This is also because we have got seating space and we are very accommodating; we are leaders in Africa in our own right and we are strong members of the Commonwealth.
“So, we are very honoured to host activity relating to CSB in our embassy.
“Whatever will promote Nigeria in China is our business and we will ensure we do not shy away from our responsibility, as leaders in Africa, which is the essence of today’s occasion,” Jidda said.
CSB, a non-profit charity organization established in 1993 comprises the Commonwealth countries’ female diplomats in China, spouses of diplomats and other Commonwealth nationals passionate about charitable causes. (NAN)
