A tragic incident occurred in the Elega area of Abeokuta, Ogun State, where a man named Olamide allegedly killed his one-year-old son during a violent altercation with his wife.
According to reports AFRIPOST gathered on Facebook, the couple got into a heated argument late Saturday night.
In a moment of rage, Olamide reportedly reached for an iron rod part of a weightlifting set he regularly used intending to strike his wife.
However, the blow accidentally landed on their infant son, causing fatal injuries.
In a video posted on Facebook, several community members recounted how they were alerted to the disturbance by loud noises coming from the couple’s apartment.
One of the co-tenants, identified as Mrs Bolatito, said she was woken up by the wife’s desperate cries for help.
“At about midnight, I heard the lady calling out to me, saying I should come to her aid and that Ola had killed Ayinde,” she said.
“I was shocked. She said they had gone to Tyre and asked me to help find a vehicle.”
Bolatito continued: “At first, I couldn’t find anyone outside.
“But later, I saw some people with a car, and we took the baby to Trinity Hospital, which is nearby.
“Unfortunately, we were told the child was already dead.
“When we got home, the child made some sounds, so we rushed him back to the hospital. Sadly, he was confirmed dead again.”
She revealed that the husband had a history of domestic violence, adding that the wife had previously lost a pregnancy due to beatings.
“He grabbed an iron rod he uses for lifting weights and tried to hit his wife, but it struck the baby instead,” she said.
The chairman of the community, Ramoni Adegbola, also confirmed the incident.
He said he was alerted by residents about the scuffle and ran to the scene where he found the couple with their injured child.
“I heard shouts for help and rushed over. They told me the baby had been hit with an iron rod.
“I called others to help take the child to the hospital. When they returned, they said the baby had died,” Adegbola recounted.
He also noted that the husband had a habit of taking hard drugs. “The man frequently fought with his wife.
“I believe his drug use is part of the problem.
“There was a time he passed out after taking something, and we had to rally around to revive him,” he said.
Olamide reportedly fled the scene shortly after the incident but later turned himself in at a police station.
The spokesperson for the Ogun State Police Command, Omolola Odutola, confirmed the case, stating: “It happened, and the police are investigating.”
