Prince Onuoha Igwe, former Stalwart chieftain of the All Grand Alliance Party (AGAP) from Abia State, has adduced the reasons behind his recent withdrawal from the 2023 Abia State gubernatorial race.
Speaking with journalists in Umuahia, the state capital on Wednesday, Igwe hinged his decision on the undemocratic practices of some political parties in Nigeria, wherein the parties have abandoned competencies for the highest bidding, especially on issuance of party tickets to aspirants jostling elective political seats in the state.
He attributed the current developmental backwardness of Abia State to the alleged failure of major dominant political parties to field credible and visionary persons to fly their flags, and also frowned at the rising tension in the state over zoning otherwise known as power shift necessitated by the exchange of political brickbats among leaders and socio-political groups in Abia State.
Igwe further maintained that the Peoples Democratic Party and the All Progressive Congress have failed the Abia people and Nigerians as a whole, as there have failed to justify the confidence and mandate entrusted to them by the people.
According to him, “these dominant political parties have failed in all indices to provide dividends of democracy to the doorsteps of the people. Lives have become unbearable to the people, due to the inability of those in authority at all levels in the state and the country to create a better environment, and also come up with well-defined policies and programmes for fostering the needed human, economic and Infrastructural growth and development in Abia.
“You can see what is happening in Abia State, successive PDP-led administration has been unable to live up to the expectations of the people, on durable roads, no accessible healthcare service, in fact, the state is completely adorned by Infrastructural deficits, so the electorate should use this period of another to effect good governance for their own good.
The Abia chieftain opined that the masses are fed up with the major parties for presiding a divided Nigeria and also added that the masses must get it better at this moment by using their permanent Voters Cards (PVC) to effect the needed change and elect people with good blueprints to enhance development at all facets of the economy.
Igwe also criticized Governor Okezie Ikpeazu on the alleged move to foist his preferred candidate, Professor Uche Ikonne on the people of Abia State, regretting that the Ikpeazu’s government has been unable to justify the mandate bestowed on him, as he insisted that Ikonne would toe the same path if given the opportunity to become governor in 2023.
Recall that Prince Uko Onuoha Igwe had during a press briefing earlier this year, held in Umuahia, the Abia State capital, declared his intention to run for the position of Governor of Abia State.
He said he would disclose the platform to actualize his 2023 gubernatorial bid.
