JUST IN: IGP Disu inaugurates committee on State Police framework

Must read

The Inspector-General of Police, Tunji Disu, on Wednesday inaugurated a seven-member committee to drive the implementation process for the proposed state police system in Nigeria.

The committee, chaired by Prof. Olu Ogunsakin, a scholar of police studies, is expected to develop modalities that will guide the establishment and coordination of state-controlled policing structures.

Speaking at the inauguration ceremony, Disu tasked members of the panel with designing a clear operational framework that would define how state police formations would function alongside existing security agencies.

He urged the committee to examine critical areas such as recruitment standards, training requirements, funding structure and accountability mechanisms necessary to ensure efficiency and prevent abuse.

According to the IGP, decentralising the police architecture would empower state governments and local authorities to tackle peculiar security threats within their domains more effectively.

The move comes amid renewed calls for restructuring the nation’s policing system to address rising insecurity across various regions of the country.

President Bola Tinubu has repeatedly pledged that his administration would pursue the creation of state police as part of broader reforms aimed at strengthening internal security.
