President Bola Tinubu on Wednesday formally swore in Olatunji Disu as the substantive Inspector-General of Police at a ceremony held inside the Council Chambers of the State House, Abuja.
Disu took the oath of office at about 2:53pm after his citation was read by the State House Director of Information and Public Relations, Abiodun Oladunjoye.
The event was witnessed by Vice President Kashim Shettima, members of the Federal Executive Council and other top government officials.
Shortly after administering the oath on the new police chief, the President also swore in commissioners of the Revenue Mobilisation Allocation and Fiscal Commission and the Federal Civil Service Commission before the commencement of the Federal Executive Council meeting.
Among those inaugurated into the Federal Civil Service Commission were Prof. Ngbea Gabriel representing Benue State and Omoregie Idahagbon representing Edo State, while commissioners sworn into the Revenue Mobilisation Allocation and Fiscal Commission included Abubakar Wamakko (Sokoto), Sen. Marafa Abba (Taraba), Ahmed Waziri (Adamawa), Hadizatu Mustapha (Borno), Helen Bob (Bayelsa) and Oladele Gboyega (Osun).
Disu’s confirmation followed his unanimous endorsement by the Nigeria Police Council earlier in the week.
The swearing-in preceded the first Federal Executive Council meeting of the year, which commenced shortly after 3pm.
Also present at the ceremony were the Secretary to the Government of the Federation, Senator George Akume; National Security Adviser, Nuhu Ribadu; Chief of Staff to the President, Femi Gbajabiamila; Minister of Police Affairs, Senator Ibrahim Gaidam; FCT Minister, Nyesom Wike; and Head of Service of the Federation, Mrs Esther Walson-Jack, among others.
At Monday’s Police Council meeting, Lagos State Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu reportedly commended Disu’s track record, particularly his leadership of the Rapid Response Squad in Lagos between 2015 and 2021. Nasarawa State Governor Abdullahi Sule and Enugu State Governor Peter Mbah also supported the appointment.
Disu’s elevation comes days after he was appointed acting IGP following the resignation of Kayode Egbetokun on February 23, 2026.
During his decoration as acting IGP last week, Tinubu charged him to reform the Force, strengthen discipline and improve public trust. In his response, Disu pledged to tackle corruption, end impunity and uphold human rights within the Nigeria Police Force.
