The President of the Senate, Godswill Akpabio, has described the recent All Progressives Congress (APC) state congress in Akwa Ibom as the most peaceful in the party’s history, attributing the outcome to Governor Umo Eno’s inclusive leadership style.
Akpabio made the remarks after participating in the congress, where a new state executive committee emerged through a consensus process.
According to him, the atmosphere surrounding the exercise marked a sharp departure from the turbulent congresses previously witnessed in the state.
In a statement issued by his Special Assistant on Media and Communication, Anietie Ekong, the Senate President stated that earlier party congresses were often plagued by internal divisions, parallel gatherings, and disputes over legitimacy.
He recalled instances where different factions would hold separate meetings, only for unexpected groups to gain recognition at the national level.
“Conventions and congresses in the past were characterised by sharp disagreements and rival assemblies,” Akpabio said.
“However, what we have witnessed today reflects maturity, unity and a shared commitment to the party’s constitution.”
He further noted that in previous exercises, security concerns had necessitated special protection for electoral panels deployed from Abuja.
In contrast, he described the latest congress as calm and orderly, devoid of violence or disruption.
“From the ward level to the state congress, there has been no record of crisis. That is commendable and worthy of emulation,” he added, predicting that forthcoming elections in the state would follow a similar peaceful trajectory.
Akpabio also commended Governor Eno for fostering reconciliation among party stakeholders, stating that former political rivals had come together in cooperation ahead of the congress.
During the event, party members reaffirmed their support for President Bola Tinubu, Senator Akpabio and Governor Eno through a voice vote.
In his response, Governor Eno thanked the Senate President for attending the congress, describing his presence as a demonstration of solidarity.
He expressed gratitude for what he termed a peaceful and successful exercise, pledging continued support for the administration of President Tinubu.
Meanwhile, the congress returned Obong Stephen Ntukekpo as the APC State Chairman, entrusting him with leading the newly constituted executive committee.
Party officials said the renewed mandate is expected to strengthen grassroots mobilisation and consolidate unity within the state chapter.
