Ireti Kingibe will not return to Senate in 2027 – Wike

Must read

The Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, has declared that Senator Ireti Kingibe will not secure a return to the Senate in the 2027 general elections, insisting that she lacks tangible projects to justify another term.

Kingibe, who represents the FCT in the Senate, was elected in 2023 on the platform of the Labour Party.

However, Wike maintained that her performance in office would prevent her from winning re-election.

The minister had earlier, in 2024, predicted that the lawmaker would fail in her bid to retain the seat, a position he reaffirmed during a media interaction with journalists in Abuja on Monday.

The disagreement between both politicians followed claims by Kingibe that the minister ignored her communications concerning worsening insecurity in Abuja.

She had also accused Wike of not prioritising the welfare of FCT residents, citing persistent water shortages and other infrastructural challenges.

Speaking at the media parley, Wike linked his stance on the senator’s political future to what he described as her failure to execute visible constituency projects.

He said, “I said it over a year ago that Senator Ireti will not return to the Senate. People dislike hearing the truth because it can be bitter. Let her point to one project she has delivered.”

The minister further alleged that the senator had not maintained a strong presence in satellite communities within the FCT, adding that such areas form a significant voting base during elections.
