Niger residents face blackout over TCN substation maintenance as the Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN) schedules critical technical work that will temporarily disrupt electricity supply in parts of the state.
According to the power transmission firm, engineers will undertake routine servicing of major equipment at the Zungeru Transmission Substation as part of efforts to strengthen grid reliability.
The maintenance, officials explained, is designed to enhance operational stability and prevent unexpected system failures.
In a statement issued by the General Manager, Public Affairs, Ndidi Mbah, the company disclosed that the intervention will involve work on a 150MVA 330/132/33kV transformer, a 5.5MVA 33/11kV transformer, as well as related switchgear components.
“This exercise is preventive in nature and intended to keep the facility functioning at optimal capacity,” the statement read.
Moreover, TCN assured electricity consumers that distribution companies would continue to supply power during the process.
The company said supply lines connected to the affected transformer would be temporarily rerouted to another 150MVA unit within the same installation.
“Customers served by the transformer under maintenance will still receive electricity because the load will be transferred to a second transformer at the substation,” Mbah stated.
However, the transmission operator cautioned that certain communities may witness brief interruptions while the load transfer is being executed.
Areas likely to be impacted include Kontagora, Tegina and Yauri, alongside surrounding settlements.
TCN emphasised that the temporary inconvenience is necessary to secure long-term service efficiency.
“Regular maintenance is essential to sustain performance and reduce the risk of unplanned outages,” the company noted.
The technical exercise is scheduled to run from 11am to 5pm on February 18 and 19, 2026, at the Zungeru facility in Niger State. Residents have been advised to plan accordingly during the maintenance window.
