Terrorists attack Borno community, raze church, 25 houses

Must read

Suspected insurgents stormed Debiro community in Borno State, setting ablaze a church and at least 25 homes in a fresh wave of violence that has unsettled residents.

The assailants, believed to be members of Boko Haram, reportedly invaded the agrarian settlement in large numbers, arriving on multiple motorcycles and disguising themselves as local security volunteers.

According to residents, the attackers attempted to assemble villagers under false pretences before unleashing destruction.

However, community members fled into surrounding bushes, foiling what many believe could have resulted in mass casualties.

Although no deaths were recorded during the raid, several buildings were reduced to ashes.

In addition to the church and residential homes, food supplies and vehicles parked within the area were torched.

A local resident, who requested anonymity for security reasons, said the assault has shattered a year-long period of relative calm.

“People had begun to believe the worst was over,” he said.

“Farmers had just completed harvest and were preparing to move their produce to town.

“Suddenly, armed men arrived dressed like vigilantes. When villagers realised something was wrong, everyone ran.”

He explained that the rocky terrain of Debiro made it difficult for the attackers to pursue fleeing residents on motorcycles.

“That landscape may have saved many lives,” he added.

Debiro is located roughly 48 kilometres from Biu, the administrative headquarters of Biu Local Government Area.

The community relies heavily on farming, making the destruction of harvested crops a major economic setback.

Security concerns have escalated across parts of southern Borno in recent weeks.

Similar assaults were reported in nearby settlements, including Harang and Tarfa, where at least five people were killed.

Residents and local leaders have repeatedly raised concerns about poor road infrastructure, which they say hampers rapid military deployment during emergencies.

“By the time help arrives, the damage is already done,” another villager said.

Authorities are yet to issue an official statement on the latest attack.

However, the renewed violence underscores persistent security challenges in rural Borno communities despite ongoing counter-insurgency operations.
