A Bauchi State man has been arrested by the police after allegedly confining his biological son in chains for approximately 17 years in Shadawanka village, Bauchi Local Government Area.

The victim, Muhammad Lawan, popularly known as Babangida, was rescued following a tip-off from a good Samaritan who alerted the authorities to his harrowing condition.

The Command’s spokesperson, SP Nafiu Habib, who confirmed the rescue in a statement, said a team of detectives led by the Divisional Police Officer of ‘B’ Division, accompanied by the spokesperson himself, stormed the residence where the victim was reportedly held.

On arrival, the officers found Babangida in a severely emaciated state and immediately secured his freedom.

The victim has since been transferred to a hospital for medical treatment and rehabilitation, while his father, Mohammed Lawan, is currently cooling his heels in police custody.

The Commissioner of Police, Sani-Omolori Aliyu, has since directed the DPO to carry out a preliminary investigation into the circumstances surrounding the incident.

He further ordered that the case be transferred to the State Criminal Investigation Department for a more thorough probe into the alleged prolonged abuse.

“Further details would be made available as investigations progress,” the command stated.
