TCN restores electricity to Kaduna weeks after transmission failure

Must read

Electricity supply has been restored to Kaduna following weeks of disruption caused by a fault on a major transmission line feeding the state, according to the Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN).

In a statement issued on Monday, TCN confirmed that power was fully reinstated after engineers completed repairs on the 330kV Shiroro–Mando Transmission Line 1, which had suffered a technical failure that weakened bulk power delivery to the region.

The company explained that the outage significantly constrained supply to the Kaduna Electricity Distribution Company, resulting in load shedding across parts of Kaduna and neighbouring communities.

However, it said restoration of the affected line has improved voltage stability and transmission capacity into the state.

According to TCN, the repair involved the replacement of damaged components and the reinforcement of critical sections of the line to prevent a recurrence.

Engineers worked around the clock to expedite completion of the project, the agency added.

Moreover, the company noted that efforts are ongoing to strengthen redundancy on the transmission corridor.

Repair works on the second line along the same Shiroro–Mando axis are progressing, and once completed, overall grid reliability to Kaduna and adjoining areas is expected to improve further.

Power disruptions in Kaduna had sparked concerns among residents and businesses, particularly small-scale manufacturers reliant on steady electricity for operations.

Hence, the restoration is anticipated to ease operational pressures and reduce dependence on alternative power sources.

TCN expressed appreciation to customers and stakeholders for their patience during the outage, assuring that it remains committed to enhancing grid stability nationwide.

Electricity supply to Kaduna is largely transmitted from the Shiroro axis, which serves as a strategic corridor linking generation assets in the north-central region to distribution networks in the North-West.

Consequently, any disruption along the line typically has a direct impact on power availability in the state.
