The National Working Committee (NWC) of the Labour Party (LP) has called for the immediate arrest and prosecution of former National Chairman Julius Abure and members of the faction he leads.
Speaking at a press conference at the party’s Abuja secretariat on Monday, the Nenadi Usman-led leadership expressed surprise that Abure and his group are still allowed to move freely, allegedly fomenting unrest within the party.
The LP accused Abure and his associates of violently attacking the national secretariat, threatening to kill anyone who tried to intervene, and destroying billboards and other properties bearing the image of Interim National Chairman Usman.
According to the party, laptops, sensitive materials, and financial documents were carted away during the raid, which the LP described as a “criminal invasion.”
The party has petitioned the Inspector-General of Police (IGP), the Department of State Services (DSS), and other security agencies to ensure the law is enforced and that Abure and his co-travelers are arrested and prosecuted.
“We demand the immediate arrest and prosecution of Julius Abure and others for criminal invasion, contempt of court, impersonation, and threats to Nigeria’s constitutional democracy,” the LP said.
“Nigeria is a constitutional democracy governed by law, not by impunity and brigandage as imagined by Mr. Abure and his faction.”
The LP further stated that the operation, which lasted over 30 minutes, saw the theft of sensitive party documents, financial records, official registration materials, laptops, desktops, phones, and other critical assets.
They said social media posts made by the faction immediately after the attack confirmed their involvement.
The party added that subsequent statements from Abure’s faction issued from an undisclosed location misrepresent facts, continue impersonation, and flagrantly defy binding judicial pronouncements as well as the Independent National Electoral Commission’s position as regulator of political parties.
