Supporters and critics of former Kaduna State Governor, Nasir El-Rufai, converged on the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) headquarters in Abuja on Monday, creating a tense atmosphere outside the anti-graft agency’s Jabi office.
Eyewitnesses said the protesters were divided, with some rallying in support of El-Rufai, while others demanded a thorough investigation into his activities.
Despite the large turnout, the demonstrations remained largely peaceful.
There was a brief moment of tension when security personnel reportedly prevented some members of El-Rufai’s entourage from entering the EFCC premises.
Sources said the former governor had honoured an invitation from the commission, following a failed attempt to arrest him at the Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport in Abuja on Thursday.
El-Rufai eventually entered the EFCC facility, while protesters continued to voice their concerns outside the gate.
The situation underscored the growing public interest and division over the former governor’s case.
Details of the proceedings inside the EFCC are still emerging.
