ADC condemns Wike’s ‘war’ remark ahead of Feb 21 polls, warns against voter intimidation

The African Democratic Congress has criticised the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, over his reported declaration of “war” against candidates opposed to President Bola Tinubu, describing the comment as reckless and capable of heightening political tension ahead of the February 21, 2026 elections.

In a statement issued and signed by the party’s National Publicity Secretary, Mallam Bolaji Abdullahi, the ADC cautioned that inflammatory political rhetoric could undermine democratic stability at a time when Nigerians are already grappling with economic hardship, insecurity and growing political distrust.

The party maintained that the outcome of the forthcoming elections would ultimately be decided by voters and not by any political office holder, stressing that Nigeria remains a constitutional democracy where sovereignty rests with the people.

According to the statement, Wike’s remarks suggested an attempt to intimidate opposition candidates and voters, adding that such actions reflected fear and declining public confidence in the ruling All Progressives Congress.

The ADC said threats or coercion would not influence Nigerians’ electoral choices.

The opposition party further urged political leaders to exercise restraint and avoid statements capable of escalating tensions, noting that public office holders have a responsibility to promote peace and democratic values rather than deepen divisions.

“If the government and its representatives are confident in their performance, they should allow the electorate to freely determine their fate at the polls,” the statement read.

The ADC vowed to resist any attempt to undermine the electoral process, insisting that it would deploy all lawful and constitutional means to defend the integrity of the ballot.

The party added that it was prepared to work with democratic institutions, civil society organisations and citizens to ensure that voters’ choices are respected.

It emphasised that Nigeria’s democracy was built through collective struggle and should not be threatened by political intimidation or abuse of power.
