The Zone 2 Police Command, Onikan, Lagos, has arrested a 26-year-old man suspected of importing and distributing fake engine oil across several states in Nigeria.

DSP Gbenga Afolayan, the command’s spokesperson, confirmed the arrest in a statement on Saturday, explaining that the case emerged after a petition was submitted to the office of the Assistant Inspector-General of Police in charge of the zone, Mr Adegoke Fayoade, over allegations of illegal adulteration of engine oil products.

“The complaint was immediately forwarded to the Zonal Anti-Piracy Unit for discreet investigation,” Afolayan said.

He added that the suspect admitted to orchestrating the importation of adulterated engine oil from China and distributing it across multiple states, including Lagos, Ogun, Kano, Imo, and Enugu.

“During intelligence-led raids, our officers recovered 280 gallons of the counterfeit engine oil from various locations,” the spokesperson said.

Afolayan further revealed that tests conducted by the Standard Organisation of Nigeria confirmed the seized products failed to meet national industrial standards, substantiating the allegations.

He said Mr Fayoade reassured the public of the command’s commitment to protecting consumers, supporting legitimate businesses, and ensuring that anyone involved in economic crimes is brought to justice.

Members of the public have been urged to report suspicious activities via phone at 09062011772 or 08166350754, on social media through X (@Zone_2PPRO) and Instagram (Zone2_policeng), or via email at [email protected].
