With 31 governors, they still fear — Melaye blasts APC over election transparency

Must read

Former Kogi West senator, Dino Melaye, has taken aim at the All Progressives Congress (APC) for opposing real-time electronic transmission of election results, describing the party’s stance as a sign of insecurity despite its political dominance.

On his 𝕏 account, Melaye mocked the ruling party’s resistance to reforms aimed at improving electoral transparency.

“APC is doing e-registration for members, but doesn’t want e-transmission of results. With 31 governors, they still dey fear,” he wrote.

The former lawmaker also accused the APC of sabotaging the Electoral Act Amendment Bill, warning that the party’s internal collapse could be inevitable.

“Implosion is imminent and explosion is guaranteed. End of the road. Votes must count,” he added.

Melaye’s comments follow nationwide protests and social media outcry after the Senate removed the clause mandating real-time electronic results transmission from the amended Electoral Act.

Civil society groups, youth organisations, and opposition leaders argue that this decision undermines electoral integrity and creates room for manipulation.

Advocates have urged lawmakers to restore the provision, emphasising that e-transmission is essential for credible elections.

“E-transmission is not just technology; it’s accountability in action,” said one pro-democracy activist.

The controversy highlights growing tensions over Nigeria’s electoral reforms, with increasing pressure on authorities to ensure votes are accurately counted and transparently reported.
