Troops overrun bandits in Zamfara, recover 2,000 ammunition, grenades

Troops of the 12 Brigade of the Nigerian Army have overrun a major terrorist camp and recovered about 2,000 rounds of 7.62 x 54 link ammunition alongside a box of high-velocity grenades during Operation IGBO IDANU I.

Military authorities described the operation as a decisive strike against a network linked to notorious kingpins identified as Kachalla Ibrahim and Shu’aibu, noting that the offensive significantly disrupted the group’s operational structure and supply chain.

The assault force, led by the Commander of 12 Brigade, Brigadier General Kasim Umar Sidi, advanced through thick forest and swampy terrain to reach the enclave.

According to the Army, fallen trees, marshland and riverine obstacles posed serious mobility challenges. However, troops reportedly dismounted and continued the advance on foot to maintain tactical surprise.

Defence sources said the manoeuvre enabled soldiers to penetrate deep into the hideout and take control of the camp.

Although the insurgents fled upon sighting the advancing troops, a comprehensive sweep of the area led to the recovery of eight boxes of 7.62 x 54 link ammunition, each containing 250 rounds, amounting to approximately 2,000 rounds in total. In addition, one box of high-velocity grenades was seized.

Military officials noted that the seizure of the ammunition and explosive devices would substantially weaken the terrorists’ firepower and logistics capability, thereby limiting their ability to launch coordinated attacks.

Subsequently, troops destroyed and set the camp ablaze to prevent its reuse.

Furthermore, aggressive patrols have continued across the general area to track fleeing fighters, disrupt possible regrouping efforts and consolidate territorial gains.

The Nigerian Army maintained that Operation IGBO IDANU I underscores its sustained commitment to identifying and dismantling terrorist enclaves.

It added that ongoing offensive operations are designed to restore stability, safeguard civilian populations and deny criminal elements any safe haven within the region.
