The Federal Road Safety Corps, on Sunday, confirmed that seven persons died while 70 others sustained injuries in a lone accident involving a commercial trailer in Kano State.
The FRSC Sector Commander, Idris Muhammed-Lawal, who disclosed this in a statement by the command’s Public Relations Officer, Abdullahi Labaran, said the crash occurred around 8.35am along Hadejia Road, Kwanar Danja.
Muhammed-Lawal explained that the accident involved a DAF trailer with registration number KTG 467 YG, which was conveying passengers alongside goods
He said, “We received a distress call at 8.35am and immediately deployed our rescue team to the scene within five minutes.
“The accident involved one commercial vehicle carrying a total of 105 persons. Seven persons lost their lives, while 70 persons—55 males and 15 females—sustained various degrees of injuries. Twenty-eight persons escaped unhurt.”
The sector commander attributed the crash to speeding and loss of control, compounded by the dangerous practice of mixing goods with passengers in a single vehicle.
He noted that despite the severity of the crash, the road condition was good, adding that no items were recovered at the scene.
The injured victims were rushed to four hospitals across the state: Sir Sunusi Specialist Hospital received 24 victims (17 males, seven females); Gezawa General Hospital, 24 victims (16 males, eight females); Murtala Mohammed Specialist Hospital, 20 victims (all males); and Abdullahi Wase Specialist Hospital, Nasarawa, seven victims (five males, two females).
While commiserating with the families of the deceased, Muhammed-Lawal wished the injured speedy recovery.
He warned motorists, particularly commercial drivers, against speeding, reckless driving, and illegal conveyance of passengers in goods vehicles, stressing that such unsafe practices continued to claim avoidable lives.
The FRSC boss also urged members of the public to remain safety-conscious and comply strictly with traffic regulations to safeguard lives and property.
