Legendary Afrobeat singer, 2Baba has weighed in on the ongoing debate comparing Afrobeat pioneer Fela Anikulapo Kuti with contemporary star Wizkid, describing such comparisons as inappropriate.

2Baba spoke during an episode of the Mic On podcast hosted by Seun Okinbaloye, where he addressed the conversation that has drawn reactions from members of Fela’s family, including Seun Kuti, Yeni Kuti and Femi Kuti, as well as fans across the Nigerian music community.Nigerian football jerseys

Speaking on the issue, he said, “It is ridiculous and disrespectful to compare Fela with Wizkid. Also, it is unfair to Wizkid to compare him with Fela.”

He acknowledged Wizkid’s achievements but stressed that Fela’s influence on Nigerian music and the global development of Afrobeat stands on a different level, making direct comparisons unnecessary.

The debate over Fela and Wizkid has continued in recent weeks, with differing opinions from musicians and fans on social media. Members of Fela’s family have also previously spoken against comparisons, urging respect for the late musician’s legacy and historical impact on music and activism.

Fela, who died in 1997, is widely regarded as the creator of Afrobeat, blending highlife, jazz and traditional African sounds while using his music to address political and social issues. Wizkid, one of the leading figures of modern Afrobeats, has gained global recognition through international collaborations, sold out tours and award winning projects that have helped expand the reach of Nigerian pop music worldwide.
