Kwara monarch regains freedom after N12m ransom payment to bandits

Must read

The kidnapped traditional ruler of Aafin Ile Ire, Oba Simeon Ibiyinka Olaonipekun, has regained his freedom after spending more than a month in the custody of abductors in Kwara State.

The monarch was abducted on December 31, 2025, alongside his son when gunmen stormed the community in Ifelodun Local Government Area.

While his son was released earlier after a ransom payment, the king remained in captivity until Thursday, February 5, 2026.

According to sources familiar with the negotiations, Oba Olaonipekun was freed after an additional ransom of ₦12 million was paid, bringing the total amount demanded by the kidnappers to ₦32 million.

The abductors were also said to have insisted on receiving two power banks as part of the conditions for his release.

Community leaders confirmed that the ransom was raised through a combination of private donations and communal contributions, as residents rallied to secure the monarch’s freedom.

A source described the development as a collective relief for the town, noting that the king returned in stable condition.

“The entire community came together to ensure his safe return. It was a difficult period, but there is gratitude that he is alive and unharmed,” the source said.

Meanwhile, security authorities are yet to issue an official statement on the abduction or the circumstances surrounding the monarch’s release.

However, the incident adds to growing concerns over targeted attacks on traditional rulers amid worsening insecurity across parts of Kwara State.

Residents have renewed calls for stronger security presence in rural communities, warning that continued attacks on local leaders could further undermine safety and social stability in the region.
